Any self-respecting Doctor Who fan has heard of a Jammie Dodger. Fair warning: this is your official nerd alert! Unknown to those of us in the United States, Jammie Dodgers are a British sandwich cookie. Jammie for the jam inside and Dodger for….well, I have no idea what the Dodger is for. Also known as a TARDIS self-destruct button to us Whovians.Really, what could be better than a fruit jam sandwiched in between two buttery shortbread cookies? Nothing. And that’s the honest to goodness truth. 🙂
I first had the pleasure of tasting these delectable delights when my sister brought over a couple packages from the UK. We would enjoy a few every late afternoon with tea while watching Downton Abbey. These biscuits, as a Brit would say, really are a great addition to tea as they just seem to melt in your mouth and have just the right amount of sweetness.
Naturally, the cookies ran out and we had to continue on in our lives without them. 🙁
After some time, I started looking for Jammie Dodgers online and was able to purchase a pack off of Amazon for an absurd amount of money. I carefully rationed them and when they ran out, I took one look at the sad faces of my kids and decided that these cookies would just to be a more usual part of our lives and that meant they would have to be diy-ed at home.
As far as I know, there is no gluten free version of the Jammie Dodger that can be bought. And when you have several members of your family that have to adhere to a gluten free diet, you adapt accordingly. 🙂 Thus, our version of the Jammie Dodger was born.
