UPDATED 4/20/20: Hello friends! I am transitioning from a photography studio in my business to provide content and inspiration for the modern mom. However, I am still accepting a limited number of portrait sessions and weddings. If you would like to inquire, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Elope. Since its introduction into the English language, it’s kind of been a little bit of a dirty word. Something that was whispered or just not talked about. You probably know at least one person who has eloped. Or maybe images of two star-crossed lovers comes to mind sneaking into the night.
I get it. Until the last couple of years, that is exactly what I thought, too.
When I was about ten years old, I started asking questions about the photos on my parent’s mantle. That was before I even knew what eloping was. You see, my mom’s parents had to elope to City Hall in St. Louis to get married. Not because they were running away or the families had forbidden it, but because it was the 1940’s and being raised in different religions. My grandpa was Catholic and my grandma was a Lutheran and without one or the other converting, there really weren’t a lot of other options for getting married in a small rural community.
We have this one photo of their wedding day taken in the park near City Hall after and I absolutely love it. I only wish that they had been able to have more taken, but to me, it just makes me so happy to look at it! I never had the chance to meet my maternal grandparents, but this photo shows just a glimpse into their love for each other.
So, What Is An Elopement?
An elopement is really more of a feeling than a certain set of rules or standards and I love that! Whether eloping means just you, your partner, and a photographer or the two of you and twenty of your closest friends and family, there is no right or wrong way to elope. You choose the where, the who, the how, and most importantly, the feeling of the day.
A day free of months of stressing out about invitations and colors. A day free of family pressure to do things the ‘right’ way. A day that is 100% focused on your unique love. It’s kind of like a choose-your-own adventure, but so much better.
