Who doesn’t love a getaway to the beach? Better yet, who doesn’t love a getaway to the beach that is just a few hours away from your home? This July, my family and I were able to get away to the shores of Lake Michigan in Wisconsin to a spot often referred to as ‘the Malibu of the Midwest’. Blue Harbor Resort in Sheboygan.
Time for Family
Every July, we get to spend a long weekend reconnecting with my Mom’s side of the family on a family retreat. This is one of my favorite weekends of the year and always has been. Camdynn and Rhys get to play with cousins who live a little too far to see very often and I get to catch up with cousins, aunts, and uncles.
The view as you come up the drive to this beautiful white sided and red roofed building is like being ushered back into an era before Netflix or smartphones(however, I can assure you that this is a completely modern resort!).
Our Very Own Vacation Home
What is really special about Blue Harbor Resort and what makes it a perfect destination for families, especially multiple families traveling together, are the villas. There is the main hotel building with hotel rooms, but next door is a series of cute houses all lined up along grassy courtyards with two and four bedroom villas. Each villa is like your very own vacation home complete with kitchen and laundry and just steps from the lake. I’ve always enjoyed the fact that vacations mean little to no cooking, but there really is something to be said about not having to leave your room every time you or your child is hungry. With a full kitchen in our villa, we were able to enjoy easy breakfasts and lunches right on our private deck while listening to the seagulls and the waves.
Nestled right on the shores of Lake Michigan, we spent our mornings building sand aliens and our evenings watching the fog and storms roll in off the lake. In between we explored downtown Sheboygan and having a blast at the indoor water park on site, Breaker Bay.
Always a balmy 84 degrees, this indoor aquatic playground is just as fun for adults as it is for kids. Even with a few storms in the forecast, we were able to keep playing in the water! I can’t tell you how many times we ran up the stairs to the giant slides. Let’s just say that I had to hand the fun over to their uncle after the eighth or ninth time. 🙂
Wisconsin, especially Lake Michigan, we will be back! As always, our weekends away are over too soon, but are always a welcome break!
